As some of you may have heard, my partial draft of Midnight Sun was illegally posted on the Internet and has since been virally distributed without my knowledge or permission or the knowledge or permission of my publisher.

I have a good idea of how the leak happened as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique. Due to little changes I made to the manuscript at different times, I can tell when each left my possession and to whom it was given. The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment beyond that as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution.

I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. Just because someone buys a book or movie or song, or gets a download off the Internet, doesn’t mean that they own the right to reproduce and distribute it. Unfortunately, with the Internet, it is easy for people to obtain and share items that do not legally belong to them. No matter how this is done, it is still dishonest. This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.

So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.

I’d rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun. It was only an incomplete draft; the writing is messy and flawed and full of mistakes. But how do I comment on this violation without driving more people to look for the illegal posting? It has taken me a while to decide how and if I could respond. But to end the confusion, I’ve decided to make the draft available here (at the end of this post). This way, my readers don’t have to feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay honest. I hope this fragment gives you further insight into Edward’s head and adds a new dimension to the Twilight story. That’s what inspired me to write it in the first place.

I do want to take a moment and thank the wonderful fans who have been so supportive of me over the past three years. I cannot begin to tell you how much each of you means to me. I only hope this note will stop all the confusion and online speculation so that the Twilight universe can once again become the happy escape it used to be. After this incredibly busy year, I am now focusing on spending more time with my family and working on some other writing projects.

To be honest, I am very grateful that I did not read the illegally leaked copy. I would full of guilt if I did. I hope those of you who read it are guilty because you ruined the book not only for yourself, but to the millions of fans around the world. As for the specific person who leaked the book, you should be very ashamed of yourself. I wished Stephenie actually had mentioned your name somewhere. You do not deserve to be a friend of Stephenie’s. She trusted you and this is how you repay her? Three words. Go to hell.

Just a few minutes ago, China beat Singapore and clinching the Gold Medal. China wins 3-0. But cheer up! We still have a Silver Medal which is pretty good.

I know that most of us are probably disappointed but we are after all a city of possibilities! Anything can happen! Maybe in the 2010 Youth Olympics, we might even get a Gold. Hey! One can dream too, can’t they?

We were all amazed by the talented little girl singing “Ode to the Motherland” at the Olympics opening ceremony except the voice was not hers.

The real singer, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, with her chubby face and crooked baby teeth, wasn’t good looking enough for the ceremony, its chief music director told Beijing Radio. So it was Lin Miaoke lip-synching the whole time for a stadium of 91,000 and a worldwide TV audience. “Tiny singer wins heart of nation,” China Daily sighed; “Little girl sings, impresses the world,” gushed another headline, perhaps in reference to Lin’s appearance on the front of the New York Times. Countless articles lauded the girl in the red dress who “lent her voice” to the occasion. What a misleading thing, but is worst of all is that there was no credit to Yang Peiyi. How could you deem a girl not cute enough just because her teeth were crooked and had chubby cheeks.

“We made the decision that the voice we would use was Yang Peiyi’s. The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings, and expression.

“Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects. But in the aspect of voice, Yang Peiyi is flawless,” he explained.

But at the last minute, officials decided a switch was needed, according to the translation by the China Digital Times website.

“We had been through several inspections - they were all very strict. When we rehearsed at the spot, there were spectators from various divisions, especially a leader from the Politburo, who gave us his opinion: It must change,” said Chen.

“I think it is fair to both Lin Miaoke and Yang Peiyi. That is to say, we have a perfect voice, and a perfect image and representation - in our team’s view - combined together.”

If you want the world to see that China has perfect liars, I think you did a pretty good job. If I were Peiyi, I would be protesting it. The song I sing should be sang by me. Peiyi deserves the spotlight. Is it that difficult to put “sang by Yang Peiyi” somewhere? And not make the world mistake that Lin Miaoke is such a adorable little singer.

Sure, Ashlee Simpson has been caught lip-synching too but at least she was singing her own song! I have to admit that Lin Miaoke is so pretty and adorable. But if you don’t have the voice, you should try out something different like maybe acting. Eleven years from now, after Peiyi’s teeth is properly aligned and hair grows longer, she will be a gorgeous singer. That’s what I predict. =)

I was watching the video of the song and I couldn’t even get to the end. The thought of another girl singing it made me feel sick.
